How To Fight Temptations

Jesus is the only one who has walked upon the earth who never sinned, but nobody has ever walked who was never tempted because even Jesus was also tempted by Satan.

Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

1 Corinthians 10:13 says:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Perhaps no one can escape the dangers of temptation but the bible tells us that Jesus will provide a way out of every temptation. People commit sins because they do not look for the way to escape or maybe they ignore the chances to get away from it. Just like Jesus who was tempted by Satan, we should always prepare ourselves on how to avoid all earthly temptations.

Every day we face several kinds of temptations no matter how faithful we are to God. However, there are few key things that we can do to fight all temptations that will make us smarter in our struggle against sins.

Practical ways to avoid temptations:

Observe the situation and stay out of trouble

Keep away from any inviting situations and don’t go looking for Satan just to show that you can withstand his hoaxes.

Avoid dangers by putting boundaries

Putting boundaries are necessary to avoid falling into temptations. For instance, as a married person you have to protect your ‘marital bliss’ that you are trying to build by putting some barriers. Barriers are essential to protect your marriage from any earthly temptations.

Avoid Pride

Never say that you can resist temptation nor challenge him. One of the best ways to avoid temptation is to keep away from enticing temptations or dangerous situations. Once we feel that we are tempted, it is a sign that we are getting closer to the pit of temptations.

Get help from your good fellow Christian

Make sure that you are with the right group of people. Remember that the types of people that you get along with can influence your actions and decisions. If you are encircled with positive people, we are less likely to do wrong ways especially when there’s somebody who does not agree of what we are doing.

God designed us to walk with people and not to walk alone. No one can live alone, and no one has all the strength -, so we need a friend or a partner in life. If there are signs of temptations, we can get help from them by sharing them what we have gone through, and they will certainly give us helpful advice. For this reason, it will be easy to resist temptations because we know that there’s somebody who lookout of our ways.

What God wants us when anyone falls to temptation?

We all know that no one is perfect, and everybody falls to temptation sometimes even though how we are faithful to God and how we try to resist from it.

In case anybody has sinned against us, we should always ready to forgive him. As Jesus said in the bible (John 8:7), “Let the person without sin throw the first stone. Jesus said to the sinner not to do it again, but he told the others, in effect not to throw stones. Jesus is telling us that we should always remind ourselves to forgive as He forgives us.

Forgiveness is not about letting the person makes mistake again, but it is one way of letting him see the boundaries that he needs to establish to avoid falling from sin.
